In the past two decades, the investigation of neotropical migratory birds, species that migrate to North America to nest and then return south for the winter in the Neotropics, has grown rapidly. It has been discovered that some migratory species who migrate long distances are experiencing alarming declines in their populations (Terborgh 1989; Askins et al. 1990). The necessity to study these birds profoundly in their reproductive areas as well as their wintering grounds (not to mention their migratory routes) has become a common cause for all field ornithologists, myself included.
